MRfMM – 6. Windows Defender

Suggested FREE anti-virus solutions:

If you are only using Windows Defender as your anti-virus protection, I’m asking that you stop using it. While the version in Windows 8/8.1 is more capable than earlier versions, it’s still not very good protection.

I recommend that you download and install either AVG Antivirus Free or Avast Free Antivirus. Both provide very good antivirus protection.

I prefer AVG Free over Avast because it displays fewer messages to get you to upgrade to the paid version. It also doesn’t require you to re-register your copy yearly by providing your email address. Both provide similar levels of protection.

You can download either from the links above. Whichever one you install, make certain to run a full scan of your system after installation.

If you still wish to use Windows Defender, do the following to enable it:

  1. Go to the Start menu and type “windows defender” in the search box at the bottom.
  2. Click on “Windows Defender”.
  3. In the box that pops up, click “click here to turn it back on”.
  4. Bookmark this guide because you will need it in the future.
